Racial Justice Trainings

Race Forward’s Racial Justice Training series is a collection of interactive sessions for those who wish to sharpen their skills and strategies to address structural racism and advance racial equity.

Building Racial Equity trainings emphasize how to challenge and change institutional racial inequities.

Governing for Racial Equity is the foundational training for individuals who work in government settings across jurisdiction. Participants gain awareness of the history of race and of implicit and explicit bias and individual, interpersonal, institutional, and structural racism and how it impacts the workplace. Participants gain skills at identifying and addressing institutional and structural racism; and increase capacity to advance racial equity.

Organizing Racial Equity: Shifting Power is the second training of the series. Participants will build on and strengthen racial equity practices for themselves and their organizations and networks. This training will strengthen participants' collective analysis of power while providing useful tools and framework to shift power within groups, institutions and other formations seeking to advance racial justice in this time.

Decision-Making for Racial Equity is the third training of the series. Participants and colleagues from their organization will get a chance to practice using Race Forward's Racial Equity Decision-making Tool.

Facilitating Racial Equity is aimed towards those who have been through a Building Racial Equity workshop and will be or are responsible for training other staff inside of their organization or network on the ideas, practices, and strategies of racial equity.

The Decision-making for Racial Equity (DRE) training engages and guides participants through building an organization-wide racial equity decision-making practice and culture that centers Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander staff and communities.

Participants are asked to attend with other colleagues from their organization to practice using Race Forward's Racial Equity Decision-making Tool (RED Tool) on an actual “choice point” (a specific decision, e.g. program planning, hiring, budgeting, event planning, service delivery, grant-making, etc.) where applying a racial equity framework could change actions and outcomes.

Level: Intermediate
Prerequisite: “Building Racial Equity: Fundamentals” training offered by Race Forward.

Facilitating for Racial Equity is a workshop that gives participants the tools and practice to face this challenge. This workshop builds on the foundation of the Building Racial Equity workshop, equipping participants with the skills, frameworks, and practice that they need to facilitate their own racial equity workshops. Participants will engage with a behind-the-scenes view of how racial equity workshops are structured, built, and delivered.

Participants will:

  • Be familiar with the practices of equity-focused facilitation
  • Have more comfort & fluency with naming social dynamics and guiding group learning
  • Be able to use the structure, frameworks, and exercises in the Building Racial Equity workshop
  • Feel equipped to facilitate the Building Racial Equity workshop

Who we most want to reach and engage:

This training is geared towards people in organizations that are already mostly aligned in their commitment to racial equity and have already dedicated resources and collective labor. The organization should have staff education as a significant priority of their internal-facing organizational change strategy, and have sent staff to participate in a Building Racial Equity Workshop.

Level: 4 Non-consecutive 3-day trainings
Prerequisite: “Building Racial Equity: Foundations” training offered by Race Forward.
